Karim Gediev, a 3rd‑year student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science named after Professor N.I. Chervyakov of the North Caucasus Federal University, under the scientific supervision of Associate Professor of the Department of Information Security Maria Lapina, made it to the finals of the XI All-Russian Youth Scientific Forum "Science of the Future – Science of the Young". A large-scale scientific event will be held on September 22-25, 2026 in Nizhny Novgorod at the National Research Nizhny Novgorod Lobachevsky State University.
Karim Gediev's project "Large language models for detecting zero-day attacks" is dedicated to one of the most pressing problems of modern cybersecurity – the detection of attacks using previously unknown vulnerabilities. The study compared 13 large language models based on two types of data – system logs and structured network connections. The key result of the work was the proof that the determining factor for detecting unknown threats is not the size of the model, but the specifics of its pre-training. The results obtained can become the basis for the development of a new generation of intrusion detection systems.

– The success of a NCFU student is a reflection of the scientific environment that we are trying to create at the department. It's nice to see that our students are not just following trends, but learning to critically evaluate them and propose their own solutions. I am sure that such research is exactly what moves cybersecurity forward," said Maria Lapina.
This is not the first time that students of the faculty have demonstrated outstanding results at the national level: two years ago, the finalist of the IX All-Russian Youth Scientific Forum "Science of the Future — Gleb Dyudyun, a student of the Information Security of Automated Systems specialty, became the Science of the Young.
For reference: The Science of the Future – the Science of the Young Forum, organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, aims to create an environment to unlock the potential of talented youth, help build a scientific career and develop knowledge-based entrepreneurship. The program includes plenary sessions, strategic sessions, panel discussions, round tables, master classes, as well as the final of a competition for research papers by students and postgraduates. It is expected that more than 600 people will take part in the forum — leading scientists, heads of scientific schools and laboratories, as well as young researchers from Russian and foreign organizations.
