At the site of the Pyatigorsk Institute (branch) North Caucasus Federal University hosts the Third All‑Russian Scientific Conference "Ways of Evolutionary Geography".

The conference is dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding Russian geographer, Professor A. A. Velichko and the 55th anniversary of the Laboratory of Evolutionary Geography of the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

– The conference is significant for the development of modern Russian science and fundamental research in the field of studying the history of the natural environment, reconstructing the dynamics of landscapes and climate, – said the director of the Pyatigorsk Institute (branch) NCFU Yana Skrypnik.

The scientific program of the conference is divided into two key stages. From September 28 to September 30, 2026, plenary and poster sessions and discussion platforms were held at the Pyatigorsk Institute. The next stage, the field symposium, will be held from October 1-3, 2026. Within its framework, trips are planned to the supporting loess sections "Refusnoye" and "Novozavedennoye", exploring the unique desert landscapes of Tersko.‑Kuma Sands, a visit to the observatory complex on the Shajatmaz plateau, as well as exploring the surroundings of the city of Kislovodsk. Field work will allow participants not only to exchange theoretical experiences, but also to see the studied processes and forms of relief in natural conditions.

Following the results of the conference, the best scientific papers will be published in specialized publications in special issues of the journals "Geomorphology and Paleogeography" and "News of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Geographical series". This will ensure wide scientific publicity of the presented results and will contribute to the development of Russian geographical science.
