NCFU scientist explained why dangerous weather events are becoming more intense

An employee of the North Caucasus Federal University told how global warming affects the increase in the number of dangerous weather events and why heavy rains, hail, floods and thunderstorms are becoming a new climatic reality.

On the air of the program "We are Talking Today" on Radio Russia Stavropol, Doctor of Physico-Mathematical Sciences, Head of the Basic Department of Analysis of Geophysical Information and Meteorological Forecasts of the NCFU Faculty of Physics and Technology Robert Zakinyan explained the physical processes underlying global warming and told how climate change affects the weather.

According to the scientist, an increase in the average temperature leads to an increase in the amount of moisture in the atmosphere, which directly affects the nature of precipitation.

– Imagine the atmosphere as a sponge that absorbs water vapor. The higher the temperature, the more water vapor it can hold. Therefore, the precipitation regime is changing: it is becoming less frequent, but much more intense," shared Robert Zakinyan.

The expert noted that this explains the increase in the number of heavy rains, which in a short time can bring monthly precipitation, as well as an increase in the number of other dangerous weather events.

– The downpours have become more intense. This is our current reality. Either we have to think about the fact that the person is guilty and reduce emissions, or we have to accept this and then adjust," said the guest of the program.

During the broadcast, the causes of extreme heat, the physics of hail formation, the effects of global warming on the climate and the possible timing of restoration of natural systems while reducing anthropogenic impact were also discussed. The expert noted that understanding physical processes helps to explain the changes taking place and better prepare for their consequences.
