17.04.23 9:25

Category: Main

NCFU, together with the North-Caucasus Federal Research Agricultural Center have created a bank including several thousand biological samples and DNA of animals and agricultural plants, so now the regional agrarians will be offered special passports for pedigree animals.

The joint lab for molecular & genetic expert evaluation has been functioning for more than a year now, with serious advances available already.

The lab can boast not of the state-of-the-art equipment yet also has most competent staff, including young researchers who have already won their due place among the world’s top experts in the area.

– It is only due to advances in genetics that our national issues in agriculture can be resolved. The DNA bank created by our researchers is not a guarantee for our safety yet also a great potential for the future, – Dmitry Bespalov (Rector, NCFU) was quoted as saying.

In the last year alone lots of tests were performed with the genetic value proven for 7 000 sheep, as well as genetic issues identified for numerous breeds of cattle.

– The importance of such tests is hard to overestimate – it will help enhance the productive capacity of these breeds by 20-25%, – Valery Kulintsev (Director, North-Caucasus Federal Research Agricultural Center) noted.

Apart from testing and decoding the genetic stuff of animals, the lab is concerned with studying wheat grain and fruits, all this aimed at improving the capacity of the most popular national agricultural plants, all the said activities falling within the Priority-2030 National Program aiming at completing the tasks set for the entire country until 2030.
