The Institute of Mathematics & Natural Sciences of the North-Caucasus Federal University was established in 2012 on the premises of two faculties of Stavropol State University – the Faculty of Geography and the Faculty of Physics & Mathematics.

The Institute is currently offering training to a total of 1180 students.

The Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has an 85-year-old history behind, which is full of academic traditions. As one of the NCFU’s divisions the Institute is the leading scientific and educational center in the North Caucasus Federal District in the field of Mathematics and Mechanics, Physics and Astronomy, Applied Informatics, Geo-information science, Physical Geography and Landscape studies, Socioeconomic and Recreational Geography, Tourism, Ecology and Nature Management, Land Management and Cadastre. The training facilities and research laboratories of the Institute are equipped with modern devices and machines allowing conducting research up to the best world standards. The major areas of research are related to Astrophysics, Geophysics, Physics of magnetic materials, Neuromathematics, Computational modeling, Landscape Ecology and Biological Diversity, transformation of population reproduction, resettlement and lifestyle, aerospace and geo-information technologies, etc.

The priority tasks within the training carried out here include training competitive experts in the field of Physics and Mathematics, Tourism, Geography, Geo-informatics, Ecology and Nature Management, Land Management and Cadastres employing modern scientific, methodical and material and technical resources available; training experts to be further employed in the priority areas within the region's economy; improved system of training.

The quality of training offered at the Institute of Mathematics & Natural Sciences is due to the highly competent teaching staff including over 20 Doctors and more than 100 Candidates of Science. Also among the teachers there are Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Science (Professor Balega and Professor Ryazantsev), Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation (Professor Chervyakov), Honored Worker of the Higher School of the Russian Federation (Professor Belozerov), Honored Inventor of the Russian Federation (Professor Malofei), Honorary Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation (Professor Likhovid), Honored Workers of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation (Professor Agibova, Shalnev, Shchitova, Associate Professor Zolnikova), etc. The average age of the teaching staff of the Institute is 44 with 91% of the teachers holding academic degrees.

The scientists of the Institute carry out research funded by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, the Federal Program for Scientific and Pedagogic Staff of Innovative Russia, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Foundation for International Cooperation, and foreign foundations. R&D is carried out under contracts with public authorities, enterprises and organizations of the Stavropol Region as well as with other regions of the North Caucasus (the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection; the Ministry of Agriculture; the Ministry of Natural Resources of Krasnodar Region, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania; the Department of Natural Resources of the Karachi-Circassian Republic; etc.).


The Institute holds regular conferences bringing together the leading scientists both from Russia and abroad. Annual events are held to join students, postgraduates, and young scientists.

The tasks for the research and innovation activity include the formation of a modern scientific society of an innovative type; stimulating innovation activities aimed at improving the welfare of scientists; establishing conditions to facilitate complete implementation of the young researchers’ potential and raising the level of professional training.
