Institute of Life Sciences


Institute of Life Science was established in 2012 as a result of merging two divisions – Faculty for Foodstuff Biotechnology (NCSTU) and Faculty for Medicine, Biology and Chemistry (SSU).


Faculty of Medicine, Biology and Chemistry had existed since 1930 and passed several stages in its development. Initially it was part of Faculty for Natural Science and Geography of the Stavropol State University. When it was divided in 1996, Faculty of Biology and Chemistry was established. After introduction of a new degree program (Medical Biochemistry) in 2004 the faculty got its final name.

Faculty of Foodstuff Biotechnology also had several stages of its development. Initially in 1968 it was established as a branch of Krasnodar Polytechnic Institute and trained engineers and mechanical engineers for meat and dairy industry. Later the branch became Faculty for Food Production Technology (Stavropol Polytechnic Institute) and then – Faculty for Foodstuff Biotechnology.

The competent and qualified teachers ensure high quality of the training offered.


Currently, 140 lecturers deliver the training, including 36 Doctors of Science (29.2%) and 96 Candidates of Science (65.7%).



The average age of the teaching staff is 46.

The University has entered cooperation agreements arranging field placement for students with the leading companies involved in food production and medicine located both within the region and in the North Caucasus (Research Institute of Dairy Industry; Research Institute of Meat Processing Industry; Research Institute of Child Nutrition, etc.).

The graduates experience no issues finding employment – over 85% of them are employed within the respective area of their professional expertise.

In 2013, Prof. of the Kansas University M. Rubin delivered a course of lectures for teachers and students of NCFU, and Prof. M. Makosza (Academician of PAS, Warsaw) conducted a number of master classes for students.

Ralph Lautenschleger (Director, International Center at the Institute of Technology and Quality of Meat, Max Rubner Institute (Kulmbach, Germany)) and the head of the department of the Institute Irina Dederer delivered lectures on modern trends in processing raw meat and meat products.

Our students and postgraduates undergo field placement and training (including the EU's academic mobility program ERASMUS MUNDUS) abroad (Belarus, Germany, Poland, etc.).

Educational activities

Educational work is conducted with students at all levels of training as defined in the Federal Law "On Education". Youth policy is an integral part of educational work and is carried out in order to promote the development of young professionals studying in the Institute of Life Science. The goal of social and educational work is to create conditions for further development of an individual who is morally stability, culture-trained, educated, with an active stance, capable of self-development, effective self-implementation, with professional and social skills allowing them achieve success in life.

In 2013, the student youth association Palitra was established, which is focused on identification and development of the creative potential in the students of the Institute of Life Science.

Special attention is paid to work aimed at prevention of violations and promotion of a healthy lifestyle. More than 300 of our students take part in the Blood Donor Day every year.

Institute of Life Science hosts a large number of cultural events and contests, such as the traditional "Student Spring", "International Student Day", "Quinta", "Mother's Day", "Creative Debut", "Miss and Mr. Freshman", "Literature evening". Traditional celebrations are professional holidays - "Day of food industry workers", "Day of biological diversity", "Day of the Medical employee", "Chemist's Day".

Scientific and practical conferences with the participation of students are held regularly, such as "Innovations in Nutrition" – an exhibition and conference where students from different specialties of "Food of Animal Origin" and "Biotechnology" demonstrate their developments in food additives and the newest recipes for various foods.

Students of all courses and all years take part in the contests locking horns for the Rector's Cup, the Cup of Freshman, as well as have sports events between the residence halls. Institute of Life science has established a group of cheerleaders, which won the 2nd place in the NCFU Fans -2013 contest. Institute is supervised by a Board of Curators (Head – Fil A. A.). Throughout the year, special meetings with the supervisors are held in order to foster patriotism and civil awareness, tolerance, and countering extremism.

To date, over 10,000 experts have graduated from Institute of Life Science.
