NCFU is hosting the Summer School for Young Researchers Borders in History & Historical Memory.NCFU is hosting the Summer School for Young Researchers Borders in History & Historical Memory.

The high guests at the event are Dr. Johannes Aigner (Austrian Ambassador to Russia), Dr. Stefan Carner (Professor, founder of Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War’s Consequences); Maria Petrova (Senior Researcher, Institute of World History, Russian Academy of Sciences), representatives of Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War’s Consequences (Austria); Institute of General History of the Russian Academy of Sciences; State Academic University for the Humanities; Russian State University for the Humanities; Ural and Southern Federal Universities; Yaroslavl State Pedagogical University.

When opening the plenary session, Andrei Likhovid (Pro-Rector for Research Activities and Strategic Development) greeted everyone on behalf of Alina Levitskaya (Rector, NCFU), and pointed that the university’s mission is to be the center of research, academic and innovative activity in the North Caucasus of Russia. NCFU does its best to promote dynamic progress in the internationalization of education. International communication among researchers opens new horizons of knowledge and promotes mutual understanding, obtaining joint vision and expansion of friendly relations.

Alexey Erokhin (Director, Institute of Humanities) stressed that the Austrian-Russian commission of historians, working under the Russian and Austrian Ministries of Foreign Affairs, celebrated its 10th anniversary a few days ago. The International School Borders in History & Historical Memory is one of the results of the work done by the commission. To this day, classes were been held in Moscow and Yekaterinburg (Russia), and now this is the first time that NCFU has hosted this conference. And the fact that Dr. Johannes Aigner (Austrian Ambassador to Russia) arrived at the opening only adds to the event importance. Our countries share common views on many issues, and joint work of historians, especially young ones, will only strengthen such friendly relations.

Igor Kryuchkov (Head, Department of Foreign History, Political Science and International Relations) said that the summer school is a platform where researchers can exchange the results obtained through studying a wide range of issues and compare their respective scientific approaches. He mentioned that the second issue of the scientific almanac, which is published by the Institute of Humanities, was developed jointly with experts from Ludwig Boltzmann Institute.

Stefan Karner expressed his gratitude to the NCFU management. The Austrian guests have already heard many good words about the university even though this is their first visit here.

The scientist believes that hosting the International School Borders in History and Historical Memory in the North Caucasus is of great importance not for Austria only yet for entire Europe.

  • We do not know much about this region, - the professor admitted, - but we really want to involve it in our research. The major task here is to establish bridges between the borders of prejudice and to get to the truth about each other, whereas young historians will help us.

Summarizing the outcomes, Dr. Johannes Aigner said that it was a great honor to join the opening of the summer school. It was especially great given the beauty of Stavropol Region and that of the North Caucasus. The diplomatic ties between Austria and Russia have a good basis and are developing intensively. History is a science that is close to politics, so developing common views and approaches, as well as a common understanding, is of extreme importance. He believes that the school will become a place for friendly discussions – borders always cause controversy, be that the limits of states or the framework of scientific concepts.

  • I hope that the International Summer School for Young Researchers will allow us to break the wall of our established views, - said Johannes Aigner noted.

30 speeches by experts and young researchers from Austria and the leading universities of Russia will be delivered and discussed during the event. The speeches focus not on European events and issues alone yet also cover the processes that are underway on different continents.
