Austrian Experts at NCFU

Dr. Johannes Aigner (Austrian Ambassador to Russia) and Dr. Stefan Carner (Professor, founder of Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on War’s Consequences; co-chairman of the Russian-Austrian Commission of Historians), paid a visit to North Caucasus Federal University.

The high guests came to attend the international Summer School for Young Researchers Borders in History and Historical Memory.

Alina Levitskaya (Rector, NCFU), took the delegation on a tour aroundNCFU showing them the so-called clean zones, which are the only areas of this type in the region, where researchers carry our various projects in the area of nanotechnology.

When the visitors came to the Institute of Information Technologies and Telecommunications, Gennady Linets (Head, Department of Infocommunications), introduced them to the laboratory of computer technology and information technologies; the laboratory of the building basics for infocommunication systems and communication networks; the NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS laboratory for virtual instruments development, where students get to know radio and communication systems; the laboratory of electronics and circuitry of telecommunication devices, designed to study communication theories.

After that the Austrian guests went to the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Security where they were told about the work of the Computer Crime and Incident Investigation Laboratory, where students use special equipment learning to crack passwords, check the authenticity of photos and videos, and restore digital information.

The guests were particularly interested in the research & training laboratory Robotic Systems, which is equipped only with Russian-made equipment. The laboratory also comprises the training center Virtual Worlds, where schoolers can study the basics of robotics, as well as the technology of creating flash and gif animation. More than a thousand children from all over the region have already undergone training here.

Alina Levitskaya told the guests about the place that the institute has in the Russian education system, and noted that Engineering is one of the most popular training areas in NCFU – this year the competition among applicants was six people per vacancy. The guests mentioned that in Austria this profession does not enjoy such a great demand.

Besides, they were also shown the information heart of NCFU – a data center that stores 850 terabytes of information.

Johannes Aigner and Stefan Carner will join the International Summer School for Young Researchers Borders in History and Historical Memory, which is to be held September 17 to 22 in the North-Caucasus Federal University and will bring together students from Stavropol, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Yekaterinburg, and Austria.
