Date of material placement: 16-01-2018, 09:48.

On January 16, the Times Higher Education published the rating of the universities that show the lowest student/teacher ratio. The published rating embraced 100 universities of which 11 were Russian ones.

The top-50 of the rating included the Bauman Moscow State Technical University (17); the Saint Petersburg University (34); the Novosibirsk State University (42); the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (49).

7 out of the 11 universities are part of the 5-100 Project – the Novosibirsk State University (42); the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (49); the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (67); the Tomsk Polytechnic University (84); the Far Eastern Federal University(88); the National Research Tomsk State University(88), and the Lobachevsky University of Nizhny Novgorod (99).

As the rating authors state, the fewer students per teacher, the higher quality of training – this allows delivering more interactive classes, the students can join discussion more often, get more of feedback, develop stable ties and close professional contact with the teacher, there is a higher level of interaction among all the parties, and the teacher can work with each student individually. These factors also help arrange a more favorable environment for training, which will have a positive effect on the quality of the degree programs and the level of the new knowledge acquisition.

The top 10 of the rating included 6 universities from Japan, 3 – from the USA, 1 – from Austria. All in all the rating had 34 institutions from Japan and 25 – from the US.

The rating of the lowest student/teacher ratio is based on the institutional rating of THE. Of all the universities from the general rating the ones were selected that can boast of the lowest ratio in question. In the total rating, the teacher/student ratio indicator is 4.5.

When making the institutional rating, the universities are excluded from the analysis in case they do not offer training to students or in case their research items published were below 1,000 articles within 2012-2016 (minimum 150 articles per year for 2017). Universities may be expelled from the rating if 80% and more of the items published there fall into just one of the 11 areas of research.
