Vladimir Kurchenko (Head of the National Laboratory of Applied Issues of Biology, Belarus State University, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Belarus) paid a visit to the North-Caucasus Federal University. The purpose of the visit was to launch a joint academic & research project in Biotechnology of food products and biologically active substances.

This cooperation began as early as in 2008, when the scientist of Belarus delivered a speech at an international conference held at the university. In 2014, a cooperation agreement was concluded between the BSU and the NCFU and a joint study plan was developed. It involves not only the Department of Applied Biotechnology, but also the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Botany, Zoology and General Biology and Research Laboratories (Institute for Life Science) as well as the Center for Biotechnological Engineering.

Besides, another world-known expert – Professor Saverio Mannino (University of Milano) – joined the project. Part of the project was equipment purchased by the NCFU, which allows developing nanosensors for lactose, macro- and microelements in food raw materials and products, and training that teachers and students of the NCFU underwent at the universities of Milano and Bolzano.

Vladimir Kurchenko was involved in a number of research projects on using chitosan in dairy products, which resulted in several scientific articles and an academic-methodological manual published, as well as in-service training arranged.

This cooperation offers scientists from the NCFU and Belarus and Italy newer opportunities for cooperation in research and academic fields.
