Training at Hong Kong University of Science and Technologies

3-rd year postgraduate student of Heat Supply, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, Gas Supply and Lighting specialty (the research supervisor is N.I. Stoyanov), Institute of Construction, Transport and Engineering of NCFU Eugene Chernyakov has recently come back from China where since last February he had training in Hong Kong University of Science and Technologies. It became possible with the financial aid of RUSAL company within the scholarship program on support of young scientists and students of the Russian institutions of higher education, that is provided together with Hong Kong University.

Under the leadership of Professor Christopher Chao during the 1st semester Eugene performed the work on development of computer model of a clean room by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to investigate the major factors that influence the efficiency of aerosol contaminants removal from the critical zone of a clean room.

According to the postgraduate student, the choice of Hong Kong University was not casual. From the very beginning he wanted to go to one of the Chinese institutions of higher education, because most of productions which use clean rooms, particularly the microelectronic industry (the main consumer of clean rooms), is located there. "They met me very friendly at the university. On the day of my arrival Professor Chao invited me to joint dinner with other members of his research group where we could get acquainted with each other and also discuss plans of the coming research. Thus, from the second day of my stay in Hong Kong I fully joined the working process”, - Eugene shared his impressions.

The result of his work is 3D aerodynamic model of a clean room, allowing to analyze distribution of air streams in a critical zone taking into account static and dynamic objects, time of stabilization of an air stream and also various physical parameters, such as static and dynamic pressure, temperature distribution, speed of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation and others.

During his training Eugene succeeded to visit various forums and open lectures with participation of the outstanding, world known scientists given at the university. One of the most memorable was the meeting with one of the leading physicists of CERN, Professor John Ellis.

The young man was greatly impressed by Hong Kong where the Asian culture meets the European one: "Perhaps, it is a unique city. On the one hand, it is a megalopolis with a lot of skyscrapers, that are several hundred meters in height, and population density more than 6000 people/km2, but at the same time it is the place with big parks, sandy beaches and virgin hills and mountains.”

We wish Eugene further scientific achievements and successful protection of his thesis in the nearest future!
