Trip to Norway: friendship!

Date of material placement: 28-05-2013, 15:41.

The delegation of Institute of Oil and Gas of North-Caucasus Federal University came back from a business trip to Norway. The delegation included the Director of the Institute Sergei Beketov, the Deputy Director for Strategic Development Anatoly Kosyak, the Head of Chair of Technology of Oil Processing and Industrial Ecology Sergei Ovcharov and the Specialist of Department for International Cooperation Vladislav Babayants.

Representatives of NCFU visited two universities of Norway which have oil and gas specialization in Stavanger and Trondheim. These are quite large institutions of higher education, but according to Sergei Beketov, number of students of oil specialization, in comparison with Institute of Oil and Gas at NCFU, is small. For example, there are about 400 students in Trondheim. But both institutions of higher education can boast good material and technical basis. "Perfect laboratories with modern equipment allow students, postgraduate students and teachers carry out successful scientific activity, – Sergei notes. – There is a lot of our compatriots in Norway because universities of Stavanger and Trondheim have fruitful cooperation with leading Russian institutions of higher education for a long time – Lomonosov Moscow State University, Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas, National Mineral Resources University "Mining” (St. Petersburg), Northern (Arctic) Federal University (Arkhangelsk). We talked to the alumni of these higher educational institutions who study now at postgraduate course in Norway. All of them are very satisfied with the quality of education”.

Education is free in Norway, including education for foreign students and postgraduate students. To enter a postgraduate course an applicant needs to show good knowledge of language (training in oil and gas specialization is performed only in English) and also to pass an interview where he is required to prove that the sphere of his scientific interest corresponds to the sphere of the chosen institution of higher education. University of Stavanger is focused on oil specialization (Stavanger is considered as the capital of oil industry workers in Norway) and the university in Trondheim is focused on gas specialization.

In addition to acquaintance with the material and technical basis and educational systems of the universities the delegation of NCFU also met the management and the teaching staff. The participants of the meeting discussed joint educational programmes presupposing exchange of students and postgraduate students for training and internship and also performance of joint research activities. "Now we are working on the cooperation agreement, and I hope since the next academic year we will be able to start our cooperation and active work. The colleagues from Norway have already expressed the willingness to give lectures for our students. We are glad that they show interest to us, – the Director of Institute of Oil and Gas emphasizes. – Nowadays Norway is one of the most "advanced” countries in the field of oil and gas that is why joint educational programmes with the Norwegian universities will open up a lot of possibilities for us”.
